Description
The Jewish Museum of Maryland has the largest single collection of regional Jewish Americana in the U.S. Our collections include works of art, historical photographs, clothing, ceremonial items, rare books, everyday objects, documents, oral histories, and memorabilia. The collections embody the story of Jewish life in Maryland - immigration, family history, business, congregational and organizational life, leisure, consumption, and contemporary culture. The Museum collections and scholarly research inform our exhibitions, programs, and publications.

The collections include 5,000 objects including paintings and textiles, 20,000 catalogued photographs, 700 oral histories and 875 linear feet of archival materials.

The Jewish Museum of Maryland is the only museum in America with two historic synagogues, preserved and interpreted for the public. The Lloyd Street Synagogue (1845) and B'nai Israel Synagogue (1876) are situated in the heart of an historic Jewish neighborhood where they tell the stories of two great waves of Jewish immigrants to Baltimore, the second largest port of immigration in the United States. In these restored synagogues you can explore a matzoh oven, mikvehs (ritual baths), a magnificent hand-carved Torah Ark, women's balconies, and an active archaeology dig.
